At Tiger Family Dental, we believe in instilling positive oral hygiene habits in children from an early age, and we also understand that each child is different. The way you approach one child about their dental habits is different from the way you would approach another. This is why our Sedalia, MO dental team takes the time to get to know your child, build trust, and develop a relationship that lasts into adulthood.

The Parent and Dentist Partnership

It has been our experience that instilling good oral hygiene habits in children requires a partnership between parents and a trusted dentist. A trusted dentist can provide tips for you to use at home based on the relationship that the dentist has with your child. An involved dentist may know, for example, that your child responds well to positive reinforcement or understand that incentives are crucial.

Practical Tips

In many cases, when a child has a great relationship with a dentist and dental team, he or she is eager to please, but during the months between regular checkups, try a few practical tips at home.

  • Establish a routine—this means setting aside the same times daily for brushing and flossing.
  • Let your child choose—sometimes allowing a child to choose his or her own toothbrush and toothpaste encourages brushing and flossing.
  • Emphasize the tooth fairy—younger children are eager to please the tooth fairy. Let them know that the tooth fairy would be proud to find a cavity-free tooth under the pillow.
